My Insane and Bold Prediction of the Week

College football is here again—believe it or not—and with it brings back my weekly edition of picking a wild, off-the-radar upset within the college football universe.

If you’re unfamiliar with how I do this, I try to avoid trendy picks while also making sure I pick a legitimate upset. Last year, I managed to get two right (Texas A&M over Oklahoma and Kentucky over South Carolina) and missed several picks rather badly. That’s okay, though. I’m not expecting to get every single pick right. I will, however, shoot for four correctly picked upsets this season.

After a rather tumultuous offseason, it’s nice to finally get back to the field. College football’s image continues to take a beating with all the scandals, cheating, violations, etc., so hopefully 2011 will bring some life to the game.

Who will it be in week one? Continue reading

My Insane and Bold Prediction of the Week

Every week, I’ll make a crazy but somewhat legitimate prediction for an upset in the college football world.

The Insane and Bold Prediction has been a weekly installment of off the radar upsets throughout the entirety of the college football season. It will be coming to an end soon. So far, I’ve hit two upset calls and just missed one. Almost doesn’t count, however … especially if you’re Tennessee. Last week brought the second upset pick of the season. Texas A&M beat Oklahoma handily in College Station last weekend. Despite a bevy of mistakes, the Aggies still won 33-19. Texas A&M’s defense stuffed the run, holding the Sooners to 72 yards on 44 carries.

My Insane and Bold Prediction of the Week

Every week, I’ll make a crazy but somewhat legitimate prediction for an upset in the college football world.

Last week didn’t go so well. Auburn pulled away from Ole Miss in the 2nd quarter and didn’t look back.

I’m a bit short on time, so I won’t dress this one up as usual.

My Insane and Bold Prediction of the Week

Every week, I’ll make a crazy but somewhat legitimate prediction for an upset in the college football world.

Last week, I picked Northwestern over Michigan State and the Insane and Bold Prediction nearly came away with an upset two weeks in a row. Michigan State shut Northwestern down late in the game and surged from behind to win 35-27.

NC State “upset” Florida State last night, but that’s hardly a big upset. Florida State was ranked a bit too high at #16 and the Wolfpack are now in good position to win the ACC Atlantic Division. I”m sure NC State will be ranked next week.

Moving along. Here’s this week’s upset special:

My Insane and Bold Prediction of the Week

Every week, I’ll make a crazy but somewhat legitimate prediction for an upset in the college football world.

After weeks of trying, the Insane and Bold Prediction finally nailed it last week. It was not without a meltdown in the 2nd half from South Carolina, though. An injury to Marcus Lattimore also hindered South Carolina’s progress on offense and revealed how out of sync the Gamecocks are without him in the backfield. Then there was some questionable playcalling from Steve Spurrier at the end of the game… Ugly second half for South Carolina, but quite the opposite for Kentucky.

There were quite a few upsets last week, actually — but the point of this section is to find an off the radar upset. I’m not going for a Wisconsin over Ohio State kind of call in this blog. Let’s get right to it.

My Insane and Bold Prediction of the Week

Every week, I’ll make a crazy but somewhat legitimate prediction for an upset in the college football world.

I’m going to do my best to forget about last week’s insane and bold prediction and try to redeem myself. After a near hit with LSU-Tennessee, I wasn’t even close last week. I can’t help but wonder what I was thinking. In my defense, I think I made a decent argument for Kansas State and I still stand by Nebraska being an untested team that is ripe for an upset at some point. I really should have paid more attention to just how bad Kansas State’s rush defense was. Yikes.

Forgive and forget. Let’s move on. This week’s upset special:

My Insane and Bold Prediction of the Week

Every week, I’ll make a crazy but somewhat legitimate prediction for an upset in the college football world.

It was a close call last week, but LSU ended all hopes of the first upset call of the year by using some Les Miles magic. You’d have to think the jar of magic is almost emptied out by now.

Tennessee had won the game for a brief moment. For just a moment, the upset was complete — until the piece of yellow laundry was spotted. Tennessee had 13 men on the field and LSU was given a gift. They had one more chance to avoid the embarrassing defeat. Continue reading
