My Completely Irrelevant Top 25 and Heisman Race

Denard Robinson did not put up a Heisman worthy effort against the Spartans on Saturday.

Heisman Race
I’m just going to include a link to the players stats from now on for space purposes.

1. Cam Newton, Auburn, QB
Last Week vs. Kentucky: 13/21. 210 yards, 1 INT, 28 att., 198 yards, 4 TDs
-Newton accounts for 62% of the Tigers offense and is averaging 3.5 touchdowns per game. He leads the nation in yardage per completion at 10.5 as well. Newton is the core of this football team.

2. Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State, QB
Last Week vs. Indiana: 24/30, 334 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT
-Pryor didn’t run much against Indiana, but he was extremely impressive passing the ball. Without Pryor, the Buckeyes would not be as effective on offense.

3. LaMichael James, Oregon, RB
Last Week vs. Washington State: 25 att., 136 yards, 2 TD, 2 catches, 87 yards, 1 TD
-James continues to make explosive plays on the field and he’s 2nd in the nation in rushing yards despite missing a game. He’s averaging 7.4 yards per carry and 2 touchdowns per game.

4. Kellen Moore, Boise State, QB
Last Week vs. Toledo: 16/22, 267 yards, 3 TD
-Moore leads the nation in passing efficiency at 183.3 and while he’s only 32nd in passing yardage, he holds a 14-1 TD to INT ratio. Pretty impressive.

5. Denard Robinson, Michigan, QB
Last Week vs. Michigan State: 17/29, 215 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT, 21 att., 86 yards, 1 TD
-“Shoelace” takes a big fall this week, but maintains his spot in the race for now. He still leads the nation in rushing, but 3 interceptions in a meaningful game will get you removed.

Moving Up: Taylor Martinez, NEB, QB

Dark Horse Candidates

-Colin Kaepernick, Nevada, QB
-Dan Persa
,
Northwestern, QB
-Vai Taua
,
Nevada, RB

Dropped Out: Mark Ingram, ALA, RB
Last Week vs. South Carolina
: 11 att., 41 yards,  0 TD, 4 catches, 16 yards
I let him slide for one week, but two weeks in a row and he has to be taken out of the Heisman race for now. I get the feeling that he isn’t quite 100% these past two weeks. He’s averaged under 4 yards per carry against Florida and South Carolina. These are defenses he torched last year.

My Top 25
1. Ohio State
2. Boise State
3. Oregon
4. TCU
5. Nebraska
6. Oklahoma
7. Auburn
8. Utah
9. South Carolina
10. Michigan State
11. Alabama
12. Arkansas
13. LSU
14. Stanford
15. Iowa
16. Arizona
17. Wisconsin
18. Air Force
19. Nevada
20. Oregon State
21. Missouri
22. Oklahoma State
23. Florida State
24. Michigan

Great look guys. I’m a Michigan State fan and I’ll say this, I think they are ranked too high, but there is plenty of time to prove me wrong…

Reading the poll reviews this week everyone is saying Boise St.’s two wins over Oregon State and VT are the most impressive two, though they are regularly ranked lower than MSU’s two big wins, Wisconsin and Michigan. Add the fact that MSU beat an ND team that is better than any other team on Boise St.’s schedule.

So not to take the thunder from your post, but my problem with rankings with WAC/MWC/etc. teams in general is this: BSU is sitting at 2 preparing for another cupcake. Teams like MSU, Auburn, Nebraska, LSU are preparing for REAL football games week-in, week-out

    • Couldn’t agree more with your comment about Boise. I do have them ranked #2, but I don’t think they are #2. Nor do I think that Ohio State is #1.

All the teams you mentioned above (MSU, Neb, LSU, Auburn, etc.) — they battle week in and week out. Boise State can’t say that. I can give TCU a little slack because their schedule is at least tougher (if you will) than the Broncos, but they still don’t have a toe-to-toe battle each week.

After posting my first Top 25, I’m thinking there might be a little different look to it next week because I’ve basically been following (for the most part) the season. I feel like I dropped Alabama too low, but at the same time — I can’t justify putting them ahead of: undefeated Utah and Michigan State and a South Carolina team that just beat them. I also feel like enough of these teams will lose, so we will keep seeing some of the pretenders rooted out.
